Obesity surgery may be an option for you if you are significantly overweight. Obesity surgery is commonly referred to as bariatric surgery. If you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40, your doctor may advise you to try it. A BMI greater than 40 indicates that you are around 100 pounds overweight. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a relatively new option for bariatric surgery (LSG). Under general anesthesia, LSG surgery is performed at a hospital. Your surgeon will make five small incisions in your abdomen. He or she will do the surgery with the help of a thin, long telescope with a tiny camera at the end. Around 80% of your stomach will be removed using instruments inserted via the incisions. The fundus (the region of your stomach that curves outward) is removed during this procedure. After removing the fundus, your surgeon will compress the rest of your stomach into a tube form resembling a banana or a shirt sleeve, hence the name "sleeve gastrectomy." Because your stomach will be significantly smaller, you will fill up quickly at mealtimes and eat less. The fundus includes the majority of the stomach area that secretes the hormone ghrelin. Because ghrelin is responsible for making you feel hungry, removing this portion of your stomach may help you lose weight by decreasing your hunger.
