Hernia repairs have been performed for many years. This indicates that while new choices and materials have been introduced, classic approaches have been improved. While not every hernia requires a particular approach, they all aim to give the strongest repair and the lowest probability of recurrence with the least amount of pain and the shortest recovery. Hernias used to be treated in one technique, known as a "open tension" repair, until around 25 years ago. This is what it indicates: Open – To provide the surgeon access to the hernia, a 3 to 6-inch abdominal incision is created. Tension: Sutures are used to stitch together the borders of the healthy tissue around the hernia. After that, the incision is stitched up with abdominal adhesive or dissolving sutures. It may be the only approach to treat a very big hernia and has been successfully used for many years. Recovery from the incision can take up to five to six weeks, and the wound is typically unpleasant. Even though the scar is often located extremely low on the belly, the incision does leave a scar. Recurrence rates for tension correction are greater.
