Robotic surgery is a sophisticated form of laparoscopic (small incision) or minimally invasive surgery in which physicians employ a computer-controlled robot to help them during some surgical procedures. A great degree of dexterity in the robot's "hands" enables doctors to access areas of the body that would ordinarily only be accessible through open (long incision) surgery. Robotic and minimally invasive surgery produces smaller incisions than open surgery (conventional surgery with incisions), resulting in less discomfort and scars.
Through the use of robotic technology, robotic surgery enables doctors to carry out difficult surgical procedures through small incisions. The positioning and manipulation of surgical tools can be aided by surgical robots, which are self-powered, computer-controlled machines. This gives surgeons greater precision and flexibility. The surgeon operates miniature instruments attached on three robotic arms from a computer panel in the operating room, making extremely small incisions in the patient.
A fourth robotic arm with an associated 3-D camera that magnifies the surgical site is used by the surgeon to view the area.
